Gladys Worthington papers, circa 1895-1982 (bulk 1930-1976).

Chiefly talks, lectures, professional files, writings, and a small amount of personal papers relating to Gladys Worthington's career as a relief worker during World War II and as a social worker in the San Francisco Bay Area. The collection contains correspondence, writings, photographs, case study and lecture notes, yearbooks, scrapbooks, and organization meeting minutes. Series include Personal, Professional Activities, Unpublished Manuscripts and Photos, and Subject Files. Subject Files comprise the bulk of the collection, and as per original order are arranged alphabetically, often by organization, though occasionally by topic. The series Unpublished Manuscripts and Photos contains manuscript copies of Not a Donut Dolly, an autobiographical account of her Western Europe War Relief (World War II) experience, which includes a 1944 interview with Dwight D. Eisenhower; correspondence related to publication attempts; photographs related to the work; and photo albums. Organizations of note include the American Red Cross; Council of Social Planning, Alameda County; Bay Area Social Planning Council; and the greater San Francisco Bay Area Roman Catholic Dioceses.

Gladys Worthington (ca. 1911-1982), born Gladys Guinaw, was an active social worker in the San Francisco Bay Area. She played a leading role in housing for senior citizens, particularly in Alameda County where she helped to establish Satellite Senior Homes, Inc. On December 2, 1905, Mrs. Tunis G. Bergen brought together a group of Brooklyn residents at the Barnard Club House on Remsen Street to form New York City's first borough-based Red Cross organization.
